Liberal Studies Student Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies - Bridge to Teaching Specialization

“Bridge to Teaching” is a unique degree-completion program for paraprofessionals in education. Students in this program earn a BS degree and receive preparation for Initial Licensure per MA DESE standards.

“Bridge to Teaching” is a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies specialization specifically designed for teacher assistants and instructional paraprofessionals who are currently in practice, have earned an associate degree (or its equivalent), and wish to enter the teaching force. Graduates of the program receive a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies and the preparation for initial licensure, according to Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education state guidelines.

The preferred student for this program is a paraprofessional or teacher assistant who has:
  • A least one year working experience as a paraprofessional or teacher aid
  • A liberal or general studies A.D (or its equivalent), 60 semester hours, or 80 q.h. to transfer into the program
  • A minimum 2.5 GPA
  • At least one year of paraprofessional or teaching assistant experience

The program curriculum in “Bridge to Teaching” is designed with an academic core, offering students a strong liberal studies background in mathematics, life sciences, social studies, and humanities to help students complete the requirements for a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies. The majority of the academic core courses are offered in an online format, allowing students to maintain professional and personal commitments while completing their degree.

Following the academic core, student may elect a specialization in elementary education or secondary education, both of which prepare students with the depth of knowledge sufficient to pass the Massachusetts Test for Educator License.

For applicants with an associate degree or equivalent number of credits (80 quarter hours or 60 semester hours), the Office of Admissions will work to evaluate and accept as many previously completed credits as possible.
