Introduction to Language and Linguistics: How English Is Structured and Used

Discusses theories of the origins of language; compares reading and writing systems of English and other languages. Offers students an opportunity to learn how sounds are produced (phonology); how English works in patterns (linguistics and phonetics); how words are formed (morphology); how sentences are structured (syntax); how meaning is conveyed (semantics); and how languages are used (pragmatics). Provides an in-depth introduction to the field of teaching English as a second language. Introduces students to the place and variety of English worldwide. Covers learning styles and an overview of the English language system. Offers an opportunity to study methodology and cultural awareness. Addresses practical aspects of teaching, such as lesson planning and textbook analysis.
