Advanced Strategies in Literacy: Readers and Writers Who Struggle

Focuses on the complex challenges faced by children and youth who struggle (or fail) to achieve measurable success in reading and writing. Participants have an opportunity to consider teaching and learning environments, variations in language, learning, and cognitive styles and development. Cultural expectations and student motivation are also examined, as are an array of instructional and assessment approaches and measures. Course participants have an opportunity to learn how to describe and analyze the difficulties encountered by struggling readers and writers, and identify and evaluate a range of appropriate strategies to address those difficulties.
