Embedding Culture through Communication

Reviews the literature on organizational culture and communication, addresses the tension between two conflicting theories, and examines the effects of communication and culture on organizational decision making. Scholars and practitioners contend that there is a phenomenon called “organizational culture” that has a powerful effect on performance and productivity. There are two contrary theories that explain how this culture evolves, but both theories argue that communication is central to the evolution. Topics include organizational socialization, assimilation, and identification. Also addresses the effects of globalization and the contemporary multiethnic workforce on the development of organizational culture. Requires students to examine their own organizations in terms of organizational culture and communication. Students are also required to develop a plan for embedding organizational culture in their organizations.
