Offers students an opportunity to examine the roots of American thought and culture to reach a broad understanding of many of the major currents of contemporary American thought. Covers the sermons of Edwards; the autobiography of Franklin; the captivity narratives of Rowlandson and Equiano; the Transcendental musings of Emerson and Thoreau; the stories of Hawthorne and Melville; and the poetry of Bradstreet, Wheatley, and Taylor. These works helped shape the direction of American literature.
