Introduces telecommunications fundamentals, including data, voice, image, and video. Covers the concepts, models, architectures, protocols, standards, and security for the design, implementation, and management of digital networks. Discusses the essentials of local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs), and wide area networks (WANs). Topics include transmission and switching efficiency; regulatory and technical environments; security and authentication; network operating systems; e-commerce and associated Web sites and practices; and middleware for wireless systems, multimedia, and conferencing. Offers students an opportunity to understand and apply data communications concepts to situations encountered in industry; learn general concepts and techniques of data communications; understand the technology of the Internet; and understand the regulatory environment.
