Language and Gender

SOC3145 / 3 q.h.
Formerly SOC 4179.

Examines underlying assumptions found in language and gender research. Can the structure of a language make it biased? What are the commonly held stereotypes of how men and women use language, and what do these stereotypes tell us about our cultural values in general? How do men and women actually use language; are the stereotypes true; and, if so, which ones? “Men never ask for directions!” “Women talk more than men do!” These stereotypes focus on the ways in which men and women are perceived to use language. Research in the field of language and gender provides us with a better understanding of the relationship.
