Description: This one-credit seminar focuses on sociolinguistics, the field of study that examines the dynamic relationship between language and society. Students will explore major issues and questions in the field of sociolinguistics, including why and how people use language in society, how people’s age, gender, and social class affect their language use, and how languages evolve and change over time. An underlying assumption of the course is that language is a critical component of social life.
