Health Law, Politics, and Policy

HMG3170 / 3 q.h.

Starting with the fall 2009 term, this course will be renumbered as HMG 6170.


Students will survey the legal foundations of healthcare and apply current case law to contemporary situations. Topics include legal aspects of legislations, patient rights, data security, professional liability, labor relations and the politics of healthcare reform. Issues include the high price of prescription drugs and why they are less expensive in Canada and overseas. Do rising medical costs produce better health? How should a Medicare prescription drug benefit be designed? Should kidneys and other organs be bought and sold? The course will include case studies and group projects related to these topics and/or others as they emerge.
