Health Law, Politics, and Policy

HMG6170 / 3 q.h.
Formerly HMG 3170.

Surveys the legal foundations of health care and applies current case law to contemporary situations. Topics include legal aspects of legislation, patient rights, data security, professional liability, labor relations, and the politics of health-care reform. Issues include the high price of prescription drugs and why they are less expensive in Canada and overseas. Do rising medical costs produce better health? How should a Medicare prescription drug benefit be designed? Should kidneys and other organs be bought and sold? Includes case studies and group projects related to these questions and/or others as they emerge.
