Russia until recently was an international superpower. This course surveys the government and politics of the Soviet Union as it was and of Russia today. Students have an opportuity to learn the history of the Soviet regime, government, economy, party, ideology, political culture, Gorbachev and his reforms, the breakup into various republics, and the problems facing Russia today. The curriculum surveys foreign policy from 1917 to the present with special emphasis on relations with the West.
