Specializations & Core Values

Curriculum Leadership and Educational Leadership (K-12) Specializations

School districts across the country are facing a shortage of strong, capable administrators and teacher leaders. The EdD specializations in educational leadership, curricular leadership and institutional leadership provide educators who are ready to take on these roles with the skills they will need to succeed.

Higher Education Administration and International Higher Education Specializations

These EdD specializations are tailored to meet the needs of higher education professionals who want a broader and deeper understanding of their field. These are particularly relevant for mid-level administrators seeking career advancement. Courses will cover governance, markets and competition, development, international partnerships, global markets, and law as they relate to higher education.

Jewish Education Leadership Specialization

A joint program of Hebrew College and the College of Professional Studies, this specialization is designed for educators preparing to move into administrative and leadership roles or are already in those roles. Courses will cover philosophies, critical issues, curriculum development, and leadership in Jewish education.

Organizational Leadership and Communication Specialization

This EdD specialization is focused on two foundational principles: First, communication is a central factor that affects organizational success. Second, leaders have a significant influence on the quality of communication in their organizations. Leaders may foster and nourish supportive communication cultures; encourage intelligent information management; employ conventional as well as new social networks; and model professional communication behaviors in meetings, when using new technology, in oral presentations, and in written communications. The ability to do this successfully will affect not only the organization’s success but the careers of leaders themselves. Students will analyze contemporary communication and leadership challenges pertaining to globalization, new technologies, crisis and communication, and assessment. Courses require students to examine both academic and practitioner perspectives on these issues. In addition, students in this specialization will be required to analyze their own organizations’ communications and identify methods for improving the quality of communication and leadership therein.

Ed.D. CORE VALUES

The Northeastern University Ed.D. program is built upon the following core values:
  • A respect for practitioner wisdom and its contribution to doctoral work;
  • A commitment to foster doctoral students’ intellectual curiosity through individual scholarship and mutually supportive team work;
  • A recognition of the opportunities for innovative educational leadership in a rapidly changing and globalized educational environment;
  • A belief that practitioner-oriented scholarship – built on mastery of core knowledge in the doctoral student’s field of specialization – can translate into sustainable shifts in educational policies and practices that will impact the student’s own institution and the wider educational community;
  • An affirmation that educational leadership is an ethical endeavor that aims to enhance the quality of life for all stakeholders: students, teachers, parents, and community.
