Summer Quarter at Northeastern During the summer, the College of Professional Studies offers classes for an 8-week session. Instead of two hours a week for 12 weeks, students who study at Northeastern in the American Classroom Program during the summer, will have two academic classes, each three hours long for 8 weeks. The classes to enhance language skills will also follow the same 8-week format. Please see grid below as an illustration.

Courses: Students will participate in classes at the English Language Center in the following area and this class work will help prepare students to succeed in their academic classes at the College of Professional Studies. Students are tested and placed into appropriate levels on the first day that they arrive at the program.
Presentation and Discussion:This class provides practice in effective speaking skills in an academic environment. Primary emphasis is placed on leading and participating in formal discussions as well as on developing appropriate language for asking questions, stating a point of view, responding to opposing viewpoints, and arguing a position.
Listening Comprehension: This class provides students with a variety of academic listening activities, including lectures by university professors and web-based video materials.
Read and Analyzing Academic Texts: Topics covered in this class are designed to help students improve their reading strategies for processing academic texts. Skill areas covered include inference, critical analysis, predicting and evaluating points of view, and reading berween the lines.
Academic Writing: The goal of this class is to help students develop writing skills needed to successfully complete university writing assignments. Focus is on the general characteristics of academic writing as well as typical patterns in academic prose.
