What is the language requirement for students pursuing a B.A. at Northeastern?
At the present time, students pursuing a B.A. at Northeastern are required to take three language courses. The first two courses are language courses (101 & 102); the third course can either be a language course (301) or a linked literature, culture or cinema course. Students must complete the language and the linked course courses with grades of `C' or better in each. Courses in a language being used to satisfy the language requirement may not be taken pass/fail.
What course should a student register for if the student has studied a language in high school?
Students with prior experience in French, German or Spanish must take a written placement exam if they wish to enroll in a French, German or Spanish language course. Students who have experience in any of the other languages and who wish to take a course in that language must arrange for an interview placement assessment prior to enrolling in the course. Please find the appropriate contact information under each language listing.
Students with prior experience or coursework who enroll in a language course without taking a placement exam may be removed from a course if they are inappropriately enrolled. The placement exam is available online for Spanish, French, and German. For all other languages, please contact the Modern Languages Department at 617-373-2234 to make an appointment.
