Competencies
The Doctorate in Law & Policy program begins with core knowledge creation and doctoral competencies in economics, research methods, statistics, law, policy, and theory. The program integrates methodological approaches into all coursework and doctoral thesis work, providing you with the analytical and conceptual tools you need to succeed.
Foundational Courses
Each month, the foundational course sequence will advance knowledge and competencies in economics, methods, statistics, law, policy, and theory. We also address questions in specific contemporary policy domains.
Research Courses
In the research sequence, faculty members explore a dynamic range of research models, analysis, and applications.
Domain Courses
In the domain sequence, the program pursues advanced conceptual and substantive topics in the domain, advanced research design, data analysis, policy analysis, and program evaluation. There is considerable discussion about doctoral thesis topics within the sequence of courses.
Assessment
Doctoral candidates submit a portfolio at the end of each term for faculty review. A qualifying paper at the end of the fourth term on a topic related to your doctoral thesis work is required. Comprehensive examinations are taken during the second year of the program. At the end of the program each LP.D. candidate must successfully complete a thesis defense.
Online Learning
Between monthly weekend intensives in Boston, learning and interaction continue online. The College of Professional Studies Blackboard learning management system provides continuity and connection between class meetings. Every LP.D. candidate receives access to the College of Professional Studies Blackboard and is required to participate regularly in online discussions and collaboration.
International Seminars
Each year scholars have the opportunity to attend an off-site International Seminar in Law & Policy. Scholars experience law and policy from another nation’s insider practitioners, scholars, and culture, while integrating the doctoral curriculum with core faculty. The 2009 International Seminar in Law and Policy in Costa Rica featured the Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, the lead trade negotiator for Costa Rica, the leading economist and biologist for sustainable economic development, the leading human rights attorney, Congressional members, the former Attorney General, and visits to the courts, congress, embassy, chamber of commerce, and cultural dinners and entertainment.
The 2010 International Seminar in Law and Policy is scheduled for April 27-May 5, 2010, in Istanbul and Ankara Turkey. |
