Designed for aspiring teachers and career-changers, the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program develops exemplary teachers with an understanding of, and appreciation for, the diverse social and cultural values and concerns of their students. Through deep exploration of the richly complex environments of schools and communities, the MAT program instills in students an understanding of political, social, and historical perspectives on education and the knowledge and skills to be effective and progressive teachers.
The MAT in elementary education (grades 1-6) and secondary education (grades 8-12), have both been approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education at the initial licensure level.
Program Format
The MAT program is offered in both a full-time (12-month) and a part-time format, with January, July, or September start dates. Convenient class schedules and hybrid course work (on-ground and online) enable students to earn a graduate degree and teacher licensure in one year or longer if desired. Students complete one term of full-time student teaching, where they will work closely with a mentor teacher to observe, assist with lessons, and ultimately take full responsibility for the classroom.
Education Scholarship for Full-time Students:
Qualifying students who enroll full-time may be eligible for a MAT education scholarship of up to $1760. For more information please call 1.617.373.2400 or e-mail cpsadmissions@neu.edu.
