Master of Education: Curriculum and Instruction

This program is intended to continue a teacher’s development as a master teacher, a general practitioner or in a specific content area.

Please note, this program is offered on-campus, on-site and in a blended (on-campus and online) format. This is not an initial licensure program.

The Master of Education with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction will continue your development as a master teacher through contextualized content courses. The program will also enhance your curricular vision and leadership skills, empowering you to make significant contributions at the classroom, school and district level.

Courses are offered in a variety of formats (on-campus, online, or hybrid), allowing participants to keep up with career and life commitments while completing their degree.

Candidates may pursue a General Curriculum and Instruction degree or choose one of the following focus areas:

  • Humanities
  • Inclusion
  • Literacy
  • Middle or High School Mathematics

Humanities
Through a “Humanities” focus, teachers develop English language arts, social studies or interdisciplinary content knowledge. Each innovative contextualized content course will invigorate practice and enhance a teacher’s ability to make meaningful connections across content areas.

Inclusion
An “Inclusion” focus aims to advance the general educator’s capacity to address students' diverse learning and behavioral needs in the classroom. Competencies addressed include: curriculum design, modification and adaptation, curriculum-based assessments, language and literacy, and behavior management.

Literacy
With a “Literacy” focus, elementary and secondary school teachers will hone their understanding of literacy development. Teachers will enhance their instructional strategies and learn how to employ classroom-based assessments that effectively inform instruction. Each course is designed to address the literacy needs of diverse student populations in general, and English-language learners in particular.

Middle or High School Mathematics
Through this focus area, students will develop content knowledge essential to teaching today’s mathematics, while learning the most effective pedagogical strategies available.  Courses in this specialization meet the Massachusetts DESE competencies and standards required for professional licensure in mathematics.
