Online I-cubator
The Online I-cubator* (OIC) provides students with the experience of commercializing a real technical idea. Study in the OIC is highly synergistic with the academic work in the Master of Science in Technology Commercialization program.
The OIC reflects a well-defined experiential process, implementing industry best practices, under the management of the OIC Director, a faculty member with strong industry experience.
The program spans the following stages: opportunity assessment, project planning, product requirements and customer validation. The end result of the process is a business plan and an investor/senior management presentation.
At the center of the OIC is the technical idea that the students will work on throughout the program. For this idea, students are encouraged to provide technical ideas for commercialization, either from a student’s own personal interest or a student’s employer.
After an idea is selected, venture teams are formulated. Using online collaboration tools, the student teams will further develop the idea through four experiential courses:
Starting a New Technology Venture
Building a Prototype
Customer Evaluation
Developing a Business Plan & Investor Presentation
The final presentation materials from the OIC may be used by the students to formally pitch the program for internal or venture funding.
*The concepts in the OIC draw from the I-cubator model, established by the School of Technological Entrepreneurship at Northeastern University. The OIC differs from the I-cubator in that it allows for student collaboration in an online environment.
