Preparing for Your Tutorial

Arrive to a tutorial with a clear goal in mind. Ask yourself, what do I want to ask the tutor? What aspect of my English do I hope to improve? If you are working on an assignment, bring all related materials, including assignment guidelines, readings, and instructor feedback. Please print out all papers in advance. You will be expected to play an active role in the tutorial, so you cannot email assignments to the tutor in advance. If you are seeking conversational practice, consider topics you’d like to discuss. Finally, make sure to arrive on time and remember your Husky ID card.

Policies

You can make two appointments per week up to two weeks in advance. Current students from NU Global programs (Global Pathways, American Classroom, and Global Classroom) can make one additional appointment per week at our downtown campus at 89 Broad Street.

If you cannot attend your appointment, please cancel it no later than two hours in advance. If you do not cancel your appointment or arrive more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, you will be considered a “no-show.” Users who accrue more than three no-shows across all Global Student Success services may be denied access to the Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the ITC? We are located in the basement of Snell Library in Room 88. Once you pass through the main entrance, take a right and head down the stairs. Click  here  for a map. We also offer a limited number of tutorials for current students in NU Global Programs (Global Pathways, American Classroom, and Global Classroom) at our Downtown Campus. This is located on the second floor of the Hilton Hotel at 89 Broad Street.

Who are the tutors?   ITC tutors are required to have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field related to English language instruction and experience working with international students. While all tutors can generally address any aspect of English language, each specializes in at least one skill area. Click on any unfilled (white) appointment on the online schedule to read a tutor’s biography. Use the "Limit To" feature at the top of the schedule to find tutors with expertise in the skill area you wish to address.

Who can use the ITC? ITC services are available to current Northeastern University international students. If you are a Northeastern faculty or staff member and need tutoring, please contact  globalss@northeastern.edu. We are happy to provide further assistance. Alumni cannot use ITC services as the services are intended to provide support to current members of the Northeastern community.

The ITC is always full. Is there a waiting list?   Yes! On the online calendar, click on the clock icon next to any date to be added to a waiting list. You will then receive an email notifying you if a student cancels and an appointment opens up. Don’t forget that you can also sign up for appointments up to two weeks in advance.

Can I require my students to visit the ITC?   While we hope that instructors recommend our service, we discourage requiring it because appointments fill up quickly, and we cannot guarantee to accommodate all students. Since we also consider tutorials to be a private matter, we do not report student attendance to instructors.

Will you edit my paper for me?   ITC tutorials are instructional in nature, so we will not proofread or edit papers line by line. Instead, we will help you identify patterns of errors in your paper, review grammatical and mechanical conventions, and share editing strategies.

My teacher is an ITC tutor. Can I make an appointment with him or her?   Sorry! ITC tutors who also teach at Northeastern University are not permitted to see current students for tutorials.

Why is my WC online account blocked? If your account is blocked, this means you have accumulated three no-shows across all GSS services. Please email globalss@northeastern.edu.
