Real-world Learning

Starting in April 2009, Northeastern University’s College of Professional Studies will launch an experiential learning pilot program for undergraduate and graduate students.

Experiences will range from full-time co-ops to part-time internships. These assignments allow students an opportunity to practice the concepts they are learning in class and explore their career interests in a practical way.

Northeastern University College of Professional Studies' programs are designed to reflect our students’ career goals and provide them the opportunity for advancement. We have developed a rich academic curriculum that corresponds to thriving industries such as healthcare, education, business, creative media, and information technology. These programs can provide specific training targeted to a single industry or corporate sector, or provide foundational post-baccalaureate education that enables professionals to advance in their field or to embark on a new career path. Internships and Co-ops are meant to enhance this dynamic curriculum.

How it Works

At the College of Professional Studies, co-op and internships are an optional component of selected Bachelor and Masters degree programs and are available to students who meet GPA and coursework pre-requisites. Click here to see what students are studying and how they could contribute to your work.

Students work in co-ops and internships for either three or six months . Co-ops are paid positions and students work between 35-40 hours a week in their placements. Internships are unpaid positions and students work between 10-20 hours a week in their placements.

Benefits for Partners

As a partner in our experiential learning programs, you will join other companies who recruit skilled students for short term assignments or near term projects. Becoming a partner enables you to be among the first employers to tap into rising talent and ensure that your workforce remains strong and competitive.

Among the many benefits to employers are:

• Skilled labor for short term positions

• Experienced professionals

• New ideas and a fresh perspective

• Cost-effective professional assistance

• Opportunity to recruit and evaluate potential full time employees

The College of Professional Studies’ co-op and internship programs are a great way for companies to infuse their workforce with a steady supply of skilled employees and to position themselves to retain top-performing students for future employment.

Getting Started

The first step is getting in touch. Ellen Stoddard: e.stoddard@neu.edu or 617.373.3122 or Cathy Evans: ca.evans@neu.edu or 617-373-6260. Take a look at the placement description form that we will ask you to fill out and submit.

After we discuss your employment needs, we will post positions to students and then submit their resumes and cover letters to you for review. You interview the students, make a selection, and extend the offer.

Your organization provides the student with orientation to their internship or co-op position and works with the student to set goals in line with job responsibilities, track performance, and then complete a final evaluation.

We are here to facilitate a good student match and support you during the whole process in any way we can.
