Examines the historical development, basic technologies, and commercial potential of biotechnology. Basic biological concepts are first reviewed, including the steps leading to the twentieth-century revolution in molecular and cell biology. The technology of recombinant DNA, monoclonal antibody production, and nucleic acid probe development are outlined along with their therapeutic, diagnostic, and experimental uses. Newer, emerging technologies and applications are discussed where appropriate.

Prerequisites: one year each of college-level biology and chemistry, or permission of instructor.
