This introductory course in genetics for healthcare providers is designed to provide a solid foundation in genetic concepts for students entering the healthcare arena. Areas to be studied include basic molecular genetics; human disease inheritance; ethical, legal, and social issues in genetics; and various professional roles within the field of genetics. Communication during the course will be via the course Blackboard site and through e-mail with the instructor and classmates. Lessons will be provided through a variety of tools on the Blackboard course site, as well as through links to external teaching resources.


Health Issues of Environmental Problems

A survey course of the key aspects of the environmental health and safety field. Topics include biological safety, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, toxicology, occupational safety, and hazardous waste management. Regulatory agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will be discussed along with applicable regulatory requirements.

Women’s Health Issues

This course addresses the unique health concerns of women. Different aspects of healthcare systems and how these systems affect women’s bodies and minds will be examined. Health conditions unique to women, the role of women as healthcare providers and consumers, and influences of feminism and the women’s health movement will be discussed.


Health Issues for Young Adults

This course addresses the growing number of health issues unique to young adults from early teens through mid-20s. Topics such as emerging diseases linked to teen lifestyles, effects of body piercing and tattoos, eating disorders, critical health objectives for adolescents, and health policy issues for teens will be discussed.


Training and Development in the Health Professions

This course provides a logical approach to instructional planning, including the development of needs assessment, learning objectives, domains of learning, teaching strategies, program implementation, and evaluation. Emphasis is also given to participants’ motivation and team approach to instruction.

Life Cycle Nutrition

This course will cover topics in nutrition for pregnancy and lactation, breast milk versus infant formula, introducing first foods and mealtimes with infants, energy and nutrient needs of growing children, nutrition during adolescence, developing food choices and healthy habits. Other topics discussed include nutrition and longevity, nutrient needs of older adults, and nutrient-drug interactions.

Advanced Tutorial 1

This course is designed as a full course to be taken independently under the supervision of a faculty advisor who will provide a syllabus, test the student’s progress, and provide a grade. An alternate course delivery method permitted when a course has not been available for two consecutive years.

Prerequisites: Completion of 87 q.h. and approval of a formal petition.
