Students in the College of Science, and students within select majors in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and College of Arts, Media, and Design, have the opportunity to enroll in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) PlusOne program. About the Opportunity

Northeastern University’s Graduate School of Education is pleased to offer the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) PlusOne program to undergraduate students in the College of Science, and students within select majors in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and College of Arts, Media, and Design. For students who aspire to be elementary or secondary classroom teachers, this program provides a pathway to earn a teaching license in Massachusetts and launch a career in education.

The MAT PlusOne provides students with an understanding of diverse educational needs, social concerns, and how humans learn and acquire knowledge. The program includes pre-practicum/early fieldwork observations and a full term of student teaching. Upon completing the MAT PlusOne, students will be well positioned to make a meaningful impact in schools, communities, and in the lives of students.

Planning Ahead

As a student enrolled in one of the approved majors, you will need to work with your advisor to develop a program of study that meets the requirements for this program. Your advisor can help walk you through the best path to complete your major requirements and select core courses and electives that prepare you with the appropriate subject matter knowledge for teaching.

The following describes the coursework sequence that you would take during your undergraduate studies in order to be admitted into the MAT PlusOne program:

• EDUC 1111: Education in the Community 
• EDUC 5504: Child and Adolescent Development, Learning, and Teaching (fieldwork required)
• EDUC 5503: Culture, Equity, Power, and Influence
• EDUC 5570: Inclusion Equity and Diversity (fieldwork required)
• Students must also complete a four- or six-month co-op in an elementary, middle, or secondary school—selecting the setting that maps to the licensure they will be seeking in the PlusOne program, elementary or secondary.

To Apply

Interested students must express interest and submit admissions materials by March 1st during their third year. To apply, you do not have to submit a full application. However, to qualify you must:

• Be enrolled in an appropriate major
• Plan in consultation with advisor and Graduate School of Education lead faculty
• Apply to the PlusOne MAT during their third year
  • Submit a statement of purpose
  • Provide a letter of recommendation from a faculty member
• Hold an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Earn a “B” or higher in EDUC 1111, EDUC 5504, EDUC 5570, and EDUC 5530
• Take and Pass ALL required MTELs by early March of your 4th year.
