Elizabeth Mahler

Elizabeth Bussman Mahler is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Graduate School of Education, where she develops and teaches courses for both the Master’s in Education and the Doctor of Education programs. In the doctoral program this includes research, leadership, and organizational theory and design courses and in the Master’s program this includes adult learning, instructional design, instructional technology, and connecting theory and practice courses. She is the lead faculty member for the Adult and Organizational Learning certificate program with the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia and is a visiting fellow in the College’s Global Leadership Program at the University of Swinburne in Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. Mahler’s research interests include the reciprocal relationship between adult learning and development, 21st-century career development, adult midlife transitions and generativity, organizational change and leadership, and qualitative research. She is currently involved in the positive aging movement, with a special interest in academic programming for individuals who are re-tooling for encore careers.  She is on the Board of the Life Planning Network and serves as President of its Chesapeake Chapter. Dr. Mahler’s recent publications include the book chapter “Midlife Work Role Transitions: Generativity and Learning in 21st-Century Careers” in The Oxford Handbook of Reciprocal Adult Development and Learning.  Previously, she served in leadership positions in continuing education, higher education, and K–12 educational environments.
