About
Dr. Lora Karaoglu Serce has been a lecturer for the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern, teaching sociology courses since 2008. She has taught at other educational institutions, including Clark University, Monroe Community College-SUNY, and Southern New Hampshire University. Her teaching philosophy has developed through her experience as a faculty member at Clark University in the early 1990s. Her aim as an instructor is to inspire in students a strong capacity for critical analysis and a socially aware global perspective. She also served as a research associate for the globalization and climate justice group at the Northeastern Environmental Justice Research Collaborative.
She has academic and community-based experience in the field of sociology, mainly environmental sociology, unequal ecological trade, political sociology, social movements, energy, and climate change. During her previous occupations, she received grants and designed integrated programs for sustainable development. As a former executive director of the International Center of Worcester, she established programs to support local agroforestry systems and global training. Through these initiatives, professionals from various countries in Africa and Europe were trained at nonprofit agencies.
Some of her fellowships and awards include Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Provost’s Office at Northeastern University, Excellent Service Award from Worcester State University, and Visiting Scholar Fellowship from Harvard University. One of her book reviews (with Daniel Faber) appeared in Mobilization: An International Quarterly journal for Power, Justice, and the Environment: A Critical Appraisal of the Environmental Justice Movement by D. Pellow and R. Brulle (eds.), 2006. She is a contributing author of Ask the Expert: Community Based Agriculture section of Health and Populations Chapter in SociologicalYou: NextGen Introductory Sociology (Thompson, A. and K. Whitworth. Fort Worth, TX: United Instructors and Textbook Authors Co-op, 2017).
Dr. Karaoglu Serce earned her Ph.D. in Sociology at Northeastern University, Department of Sociology & Anthropology, an M.S. degree in Nonprofit Management from Worcester State University, and an M.A. degree in International Development and Social Change from Clark University.
